Preventing Gingivitis with Herbal Remedies

There are a wide variety of herbs, teas and spices that can be used to both treat and prevent gingivitis.

Sage

Salvia officinalis, common Sage has many medicinal properties and as an infusion its tea has long been valued as a mouth wash to treat bleeding gums. The antiseptic and astringent properties of this strong scented herb helps destroy the bacteria that causes gingivitis.

According to Maude Grieves’ A Modern Herbal the fresh leaves, rubbed on the teeth, will cleanse them and strengthen the gums.

Sage contains thujone which may cause convulsions in very high doses so it should be used in moderation.

German Chamomile

Matricaria recutita, like Sage, Chamomile is antispetic but it also has anti-inflammatory and pain-killing properties. Unlike Sage there are no side-effects. A strong infusion of Chamomile can be used as a mouth wash. Chamomile tea is also known for its soothing and calming effects.

Stinging Nettle

Urtica dioica, chock full of nutrients including magnesium and vitamin C both essential to gum health, Nettle has medicinal properties that help treat gingivitis. The antibacterial nature of Nettle helps reduce plaque and its antiseptic nature is good for bleeding gums.

Tea

Camellia sinensi, black tea is also an astringent and antibaterial agent that can be used to prevent both tooth decay and gingivitis.

I would like to know if an operation is dangerous to put the gums back to form.

I assume you are talking about some sort of soft tissue (aka gingival) graft where the dentist or periodontist will take healthy gum tissue from somewhere else in the mouth (usually the palate) and apply it over an area that has receded and is exposing the roots of your teeth.

I’ve had this procedure done and it sounds worse than it actually is. I am not qualified to say whether it is dangerous or not. It is a simple procedure. In my opinion the greatest risk is after the procedure is done. You have to be very careful to avoid infection. They will give you a very strong antiseptic mouthwash to use. It is really horrible. I would use OraMD instead but this is my personal opinion.

Whatever you do, it is no use getting this procedure done if you haven’t taken care of the cause of your gingivitis or periodontitis.

Hope this helps.
