4 Natural Non-Toxic Toothpastes

by Rose on July 20, 2014

This article is about non-toxic toothpastes including a wide variety of natural toothpaste ingredients and recipes to make your own!

If you’ve read any of the other articles on this website then you know I am extremely fond of OraMD. It is my toothpaste of choice. I’ve been using it for 6 years now. Wow! That is a long time for me to go without a gum infection. But that’s my true story. Before using OraMD I repeatedly experienced terrible gum infections due to deep pockets caused by previous bouts of chronic gingivitis. It didn’t matter how diligent I was about my oral hygiene. I flossed two or three times a day. I used what I thought were healthy toothpastes and a variety of commercial mouthwashes to no avail!

OraMD is Not the Only Healthy Choice for a Toothpaste

The important point is don’t put toxins in your mouth. Make sure you’ve read my article about toxic toothpastes and mouthwashes and then consider cleaning out your toiletries cupboard. Replace those toxins with a homemade or a ready-made natural and non-toxic toothpaste.

Make Your Own Natural Toothpaste

Here are some of the ingredients commonly found in a variety of make-your-own toothpaste recipes:

  • aloe vera
  • baking soda
  • calcium-magnesium vitamin C powder
  • charcoal
  • cheap brandy
  • coconut oil
  • echinacea power
  • goldenseal powder
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • prickly ash bark
  • vodka
  • sea salt
  • water

Glycerin and xylitol are also commonly listed in homemade recipes but they are not healthy ingredients.1

Essential Oil for Taste and Plaque Prevention

And while most toothpaste recipes suggest some essential oil for taste the reality is that essential oils are potent against bacteria that cause plaque and bad breath. Essential oils also seep below the gum line and linger to fight bacteria longer than other ingredients. Make sure you use medicinal grade essential oils. 2

  • anise
  • cinnamon
  • clove
  • fennel
  • myrrh
  • oregano
  • peppermint
  • spearmint
  • sweet orange
  • tea tree
  • thyme
  • wintergreen

Here are some references to all sorts of toothpaste recipes using a selection of the ingredients listed above. After you get the basic idea you can concoct your own recipe according to your taste preferences.

These Two Toothpastes Are Totally Natural

In my search for other all natural non-toxic toothpastes, I found only two (in addition to OraMD) that are truly devoid of toxic ingredients:

Natural But Not Totally Safe

I found suggestions that these brands offer natural toothpastes…

  • Tom’s of Maine
  • Jason Natural Toothpastes
  • Weleda Toothpastes
  • Himalaya

…but upon closer examination I find they contain one or more of the ingredients listed in my article on toxic toothpastes.

So three natural toothpastes plus make-your-own recipes equals four!

Here is one more all natural option THIS!

  1. Glycerin reportedly prevents the natural re-enameling of teeth and manufactured xylitol is not natural and is potentially toxic. (See http://www.naturalnews.com/022986_xylitol_health_sugar.html
  2. The purest medicinal grade essential oils in the world are found at Young Living.

Hi there
Wow this is fantastic reading! I know a little about natural alternatives but in the space of 15mins reading I’ve learned so much and felt compelled to write and thank you for such clear and well written information. I’m very grateful, and excited to see the results of opting for natural ingredients for a gingivitis flare up over awful chlorhexidine. It no doubt goes without saying I too would be most appreciative of the recipe when you have a moment.
Sincere thanks
